Using a virtual card for subscriptions

A virtual card may be used for eligible recurring services, but a successful first payment does not guarantee future renewals. Plan for the entire subscription cycle.

Before starting a subscription

Review the merchant’s renewal schedule, cancellation process, price changes and accepted payment methods. Confirm that the card is available for the intended merchant and that the balance you see is available to the card, not only to a separate wallet.

Think beyond the first charge

Recurring payments may be processed later, in another currency, or after a merchant changes its billing arrangement. Keep track of the renewal date and ensure the card remains valid for the full period you intend to use the service.

Subscription checklist

  • Save the merchant’s cancellation link and renewal date.
  • Check the card’s stated expiry and the current card status.
  • Keep only the amount you intend to spend available to the card.
  • Review transaction alerts and unfamiliar activity promptly.

A merchant, card network or issuer can apply its own rules to recurring payments. Review the live information before relying on a card for a subscription.
